master gone before, and offers encouragement on the spiritual path.  Through pilgrimage we pacify
previous negative karma and vow to cease the accumulation of negative karma in future lifetimes.
Lumbini  in southern Nepal is the
birthplace of Lord Buddha, born in 543 BC
as the Sakya Prince, Siddhartha Gautama.  

It is said in the Parinirvana Sutra that
Buddha identified four places of future
pilgrimage:  the sites of his birth,
enlightenment, first discourse, and death.

- Maya
Devi, Buddha’s mother, gave birth to the
child on her way to her parent's home in
Devadaha while taking rest in Lumbini
under a sal tree.

While she was standing, she felt labour
pains and catching hold of a drooping
branch of a Sal tree, Mayadevi, leaning
on the tree, gave birth to Prince
Siddhartha from her right side. A baby,
the future Buddha, was born.

lotus flower, but he stood and
walked seven steps in each of
the four directions,
announcing his great destiny.
Sacred Garden - the focal point of
Lumbini Garden, it symbolizes the
birthplace of the Lord Buddha and its
beauty is also described in Pali and
Sanskrit literature.  The form of a
circle enclosing squares is a
universal symbol of purity and
simplicity.
Massive Ashoka Pillar - In
1895, archeologists unearth
the inscribed pillar,  erected to
commemorate the visit of the
Mauryan Emperor Ashoka in
249 BC.  Since 1970, the
sacred site has been
protected by the Lumbini
Development Trust.
